Sprites
The majority of navigation on sites these days uses text and color plus advanced CSS techniques like rounded corners, gradients, and shadows to create richly textured navigation. We will be examining these advanced styling features in an upcoming module but, until we do, we will examine how to create a rollover effect using only images. This task can also be accomplished with JavaScript, but with the advances of CSS over the last few years, there really is no need. This technique may seem odd at first, but as we go along, you will get begin to comprehend what it is we are actually doing.
The advantage of using sprites is that the web browser only needs to request one image rather than many images, which can make the web page load faster.
As the time this module is written, touch screen devices will not change a link's state when the user hover over it, as the screens do not yet have a way to tell when the user is hovering. However, they will change their appearance when the user activates them.
